The scariest day ever.
Jul. 2nd, 2004 09:47 pmI got up late today. At around one, I went into the bathroom, and I could smell something burning. I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. Then I saw electricity arching from the cold water pipe. Then the electricity stopped arching, but there was some smoking so I ran into the kitchen to get a container for water. I decided that I would rather dump water on it than have the house burn down. I get into the kitchen, the room is full of smoke. I dump the water, and then I go outside, thinking that there was some electric short with our swamp cooler. So I run outside to see flames coming out of the wooden house that houses our well pump and the water tank. I tried to throw water on it, but then I realized I couldn’t do much. I then ran inside and called 911. Eventually the whole structure was enveloped with flames. The house wall closest to the pump house got so hot that the outdoor thermometer exploded. Luckily, the fire department got there and we survived, but I was very scared. The water tank that holds the water directly from the pump looks like a cylindrical drum. The water inside the tank was so hot that the top puffed out like a bubble. I was running past the pump house and just as I passed it, something blew up. Our landlady (who in the past two months has survived her husbands death and two fires on her property) called and electrician. As it turned out, the electrical board that runs the pump shorted out, causing the fire. So now we have no water until it gets fixed, but at least our house didn’t burn down. So how was your day?
